Take Charge of your Child's High School Experience with Dual Enrollment at PacPrep

Imagine this scenario: your child has failed their second semester of Algebra 1. That summer, they enroll with Pacific Preparatory to retake the course and replace the failing grade on their school’s transcript. While your original goal was just to get credit replacement, you and your child realized that 1:1 learning works especially well for them. They now feel confident about math and they even wanted to tell you about something they learned over the dinner table (!). We routinely hear stories like this from the families we work with. The question then becomes: how can we continue to incorporate 1:1 classes into my child’s high school experience while still keeping them enrolled with their friends at their current school? This is where dual enrollment plans come into play.

Learn more about dual enrollment from Assistant Head of School, Dr. Staci Stutsman.

This fall, we’ve been chatting with more and more families who are interested in dual enrollment options for their children. With Pacific Preparatory dual enrollment, students can be enrolled in their primary school of record while supplementing their coursework with 1:1 PacPrep courses. Students elect to dual enroll for a variety of reasons:

  • They wish to accelerate their pathway to graduation and graduate early

  • They wish to take honors and AP courses not available at their school

  • They wish to retake a course for grade replacement

  • They benefit from 1:1 instruction for any number of reasons and would like to learn via this mode of instruction as much as possible while still enjoying the social benefits of their school

Even if families know that they want to pursue dual enrollment, they often don’t know where to start. This is where I’m happy to come in to help.

To prepare for dual enrollment, families should do the following:

  • Contact your child’s counselor to verify their dual enrollment and transfer credit policy.

    • Sample language: Hi [counselor], My child [name] would like to take a 1:1 course through Pacific Preparatory school. They are a 1:1 private school accredited through Cognia. You can view their A-G course list here. Can you please let me know the process for receiving approval for transfer credits? I am cc’ing their Asst. Head of School Dr. Stutsman (staci@pacificpreparatory.com) here to help coordinate if you have any questions. Thank you!

  • If interested in pursuing dual enrollment throughout your child’s high school experience:

    • Work with your child’s counselor and PacPrep to determine what courses your child needs to graduate. Often, a counselor has already developed a road map for your child.

    • Proactively plan ahead and decide which courses your child would like to take with PacPrep throughout their high school years.

  • Let PacPrep take care of the rest as we prepare and send report cards and transcripts on your behalf to your child’s school of record.

Alternative Options for Dual Enrollment

While Pacific Preparatory offers fully customized, live 1:1 courses, some families opt for asynchronous courses at other online schools. Families might choose this option if their child’s schedule cannot sustain a consistent class meeting time or if their child is a straight-A student and independent learner.

If you have selected this option but your child would benefit from flexible live 1:1 instruction, PacPrep has partnered with Tutor Corps to help families supplement these fully asynchronous courses to ensure student success. Students are paired with content experts who can reteach content as needed, answer questions, and create a sustainable schedule with accountability for course completion.
